*note… I don’t make any money or anything from these listings, I don’t even get guestlist (although I wouldn’t say no to guestlist… gigging is expensive!), I’m just doing it, because people need to know where to see live music.

What did I see/hear/do in October?

I have to scroll through the photos on my phone every time I write this summary, otherwise I’d forget half the things I’ve done!

Rizwan-Muazzam Qawawals at the Southbank Centre

October started off with the Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwals, a packed concert hall with a performance full of energy, I expected to be dazzled a little more than I was though.

I went to the NTS hosts party and finally met more of the hosts and other team that are part of the wider NTS family, it was great to chat and appreciate the hosts of the shows that I listen to on the station!

Ustad Noor Baksh at the Barbican for Dialled In

The Barbican and Dialled In presented a triple-bill programme of Amrit Kaur, Jaubi and Ustad Noor Baksh, the place was heaving with anticipation, there were so many famililar faces in the crowd and the performances were great, Amrit Kaur showcased her amazing voice, whilst also playing the beautiful instrument, the sarangi. Jaubi delivered a set comprising of a raga music piece by Kashif Ali Dhani on tabla & Zohaib Hassan Khan on the sarangi (there’s never to much sarangi) and were then joined by the other members of the extended band; the band leader Ali Riaz Baqar was unable to attend, but Tenderlonious stepped in and led an enthuisastic band. This night however, was all about the tremendous Ustad Noor Baksh, Doshambay, and Daniyal. They got on stage and started dropping bangers straight away, and did not stop, going into overtime to the delight of the crowd. The bouncers tried to stop the dance… but the crowd responded with ‘My right to dance... when I want, where I want, and how I want is a right that you cannot take away!’ (footloose according to google); they turned the walkway into a dancefloor and celebrated with joy and exhubrance all-night long! So long into the night, that merch table had to shut down and get out of there and refuse sales to the large line that had formed for t-shirts, vinyl and totes!

NOWISWHENWEARE (the stars) at Rambert Dance

I went to NOWISWHENWEARE (the stars), you’re led through a maze of corridors, asked to deposit your bags and coats into a cloakroom, then given a long explanation to the logistics of the experience you’re about to enter and then are led into a pitch black dark room. Then the performance starts and 4000 tiny led lights begin to flicker into life, the sounds from a 496-channel soundscape proceed to envelope you and you are free to move around the room, through the lights hanging from the ceiling; the option to sit down is there too. The performance is a 30 minute loop and you are encouraged to stay for as long as you want, because you do need an hour or two to fully appreciate the stillness and comforting movement of the lights.

Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange at Corsica Studios

It’s nice when you can walk to a gig and then walk home again… Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange played at Corsica Studio, the support act, who’s name I’ve totally forgotten were a brilliant two piece and set the mood for the night; Ziggy and the band then exchanged a huge amount of energy with the crowd, it was an absolutely awesome performance that just kept on getting better and better at one point one of Lewis Moody’s keyboards wasn’t working, but he didn’t care and smashed it out of the park anyway. I’ve got Ziggy and Lewis joining me in the Voices studio live this month to talk about their forthcoming album made with musicians in Mumbai with references to the 80’s bollywood sound! Definitely tune in for that!

Cai Guo Qiang at the White Cube, Bermondsey

Cai Gou Qiang’s show at the White Cube has some really interesting pieces, I went into the exhibition not really knowing much about the artist beforehand and proceeded through each of the rooms to check out the fascinating textures and colours on display. The video at the end gives a visual timeline of his practice and shows his other works as well as the scale of the hugh sky art that he’s made!

Factory Setting at Venue MOT

I’ve been meaning to go to Factory Setting for a while now, and it was a complete nerdfest of some many different varieties of synths on a big table in the middle of the room. A collective appreciation for each others work in creating music from synthesizers and drum machines made for a great environment and enjoyable experience. Can’t wait for the next one!

Gondwana Presents at the Southbank Centre

The Gondwana Presents event had three acts signed to the record label, starting with Paradise Cinema, Ambre Ciel and Vega Trails. What a beautiful evening, the music was stunning, the lighting was amazing, the vibes were vibing. Paradise Cinema had Jack Wyllie improvising a soundscape for 30 mins with tracks from his recent release with musicians from Senegal. Ambre Ciel was amazing, she had a string quintet accompanying her on the piano and synth and it sounded gorgeous; a very organic, but minimal sound… I just love strings. So I was super happy when Vega Trails turned up with a string quartet too. The whole night was quality.

Dyana Gravina/Iklecktik at Peckham Levels (and the outdoor rooftop cinema on the Bussey Building showing the Dark Knight through the window!)

I somehow missed all the Iklecktic sessions at their old venue, so definitely didn’t want to miss their first session at Peckham Levels, I think I missed a few performances, but caught 4 of them. Sunday night and it was packed! The crowd were entranced with each performance, my friend Suren was showcasing his ‘𝙼𝙸𝚂𝚂𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲’ project, he’s managed to find loads of music making software from the late 90’s up to 2010 and runs a number of these apps on two macbooks hooked up to two large monitors, so you can see him working away in realtime to create music, it was fascinating to hear the sounds from these apps on a proper sound system and then to see the speed of Suren producing so many layers and textures with a multitude of different applications! Dyana Gravina combined spoken word supported by sound from Atay Ilgun and used numerous props to create a powerful visual.

Me.. at Brown Excellene Festival

Brown Excellence Festival in Bristol was loads of fun, the bill included Thempress, Jawari, Shivani Sen, Vishnu Vijayan, Baalti, Arabesque and Brown Excellence! I opened the main room and then played an ambient set in the chill out room!

Radio Shows — September

I apologise for all the radio activity this month! I had a guest appearance on Mode London, I did a set that consisted mainly of 140bpm tracks from south asian producers, theres also a video of the whole thing on youtube if you need to see me looking very serious and working out how to navigate these two hours! There’s also an option to download the mix if you need to listen to it over and over again for whatever reason I guess.

On Nāda Sonics this month, I featured artists appearing at the Darbar Festival, a number of emerging artists alongside more prominent musicians.

This months Sister Midnight show… which I still have thought of a name for, was another exploration into dark, grimey, garagey dubby, bass, club sound; I’m working it out at the moment, but it is a whole load of fun!

I explored new music releases from the South Asian Diaspora for The World is Sound on Voices radio, an exciting assortment of genres and styles, with a cheeky mix of selections from No1Fan at the end.

For my October G Shock Takeover session, I got in two wonderful people. Rian I

For the Diwali/Bandi Chhor Divas Takeover by the Awaaz Collective, I spoke with Nishanti, a dj and co-founder of Enroot; we spoke about food, music, a visit to India and played a whole range of music! The Awaaz Collective put together a wonderful varied day of programming, which you should definitely check out, as well listening to music, it was a really nice time spent hanging out with friends which makes a day of radio a much more involved experience with people in the studio adding energy whilst whomever is broadcasting!

Check out the all the shows from the Awwaz Takeover in chronological order:

November Radio Dates

My Gigs

I’m back at Sauna Social Club at the end of the month, see you there for some ambient soundscapey fun! :)

Music Recommendations

Nala Sinephro… does a soundtrack for the Rock and it sounds beautiful, it’s way too short, but makes it easier to put on repeat for multiple listens though!

Last month Lefto Early Bird celebrated 30 years of doing radio by putting on a 30 hour radio broadcast, inviting some amazing djs and producers to take part, I’d never heard of The Untouchables before, but there were so good, all their releases are heavy and so flithy, definitely check them out!

I saw Sheherazaad live for the first time this year and she was incredible live, new single from her is heavy, ‘Gulukara (Songstress) is a nocturnal hymn highlighting the historical confluence of sex work and female artistry. It’s a lewd, yet wizened dialogue between two songstresses who converse in the belly of an urban underworld.‘!

I heard a track by Civilistjävel! (Swedish producer Tomas Bodén) on a mix on thegrin.io and was instantly captivated, he’s released three albums and this release is a collections of dub ‘versions’ of tracks from the album Marjaa: The Battle of the Hotels released in 2023 by Mayssa Jallad, an album described as ‘Attempting to process historical trauma through mapping Beirut’s violent past upon a present that remains littered with the ghosts of abandoned architecture’; you need to listen to both albums as they are both beautiful, the stripped down dubby soundscapes of the versions album are stunning.

I’ve already spoken about her earlier, so all you need to know is that you need to listen to this beautiful album!

20g is ONNO Collective’s fourth compilation, described as ‘a sonic map of India’s outer-edge electronic and experimental music scenes, featuring 20 acts from across the country’; there is a lovely variety of musical styles and some amazing tracks, I’ve played a few out in sets already and they sound brilliant!

June and July I know, I’ll get them done! Share the gig listings with people you think would love to know more about live raga music and lets get more people going out! 🙂
